Hey all. Another new mix. This time I have 3 hours of what I am calling “British Underground Folk”. This covers a lot of sonic ground, so things like psych folk, traditional folk and some progressive rock sort of fit into this arrangement
I have been listening to this stuff since I can remember and i always find it a comforting listen. This is by no means comprehensive in any way. I really tried to mix this based on “vibe” for lack of a better word. There are some artists that I left off that I truly love but that didn’t fit. Comus, The Trees & Mellow Candle come to mind
Both of these mixes were radio shows that I have combined so there will be a few artists that are repeated and one of 2 tracks that appear twice as well. I do hope that i can be forgiven for that. I do try to make them as diverse as possible but I erred on the side of feel for these mixes
There has been a lot of scholarship on this subject of course and if you want to delve deeper into the subject, you really cant to better than Rob Young’s book “Electric Eden”
There have also been some really excellent compilations as well. One of the best is “Dust On The Nettles: A Journey Through The British Underground Folk Scene 1967-72”. Very comprehensive indeed
Anyhow, I hope this is of interest and if your not already familiar with this style, I hope that this mix, along with the resources I have given above allow you to explore this fantastic sound that so many of us hold near and dear
Looking forward to this. I’d also highly recommend the follow up to Dust on the Nettles, Sumer Is Icumen In: The Pagan Sound of British & Irish Folk 1966-1975. My starting point for this music, way back when, was the late lamented website The Unbroken Circle, whose series of very unofficial CDrs, Lammas Night Laments, was a real eye opener.
