zikzak mix 3 : kosmische

If you know my music, or my postings on Twitter and the like, you will no doubt know that the “kosmische” style is one that I am heavily interested and associated with. I’m not always happy with the label, but using the term “kosmische” helps differentiate certain 70’s era music from each other and gives it a loose understanding. I used to tend to call it “space rock or “cosmic rock” but its kind of become its own thing, so I just kinda go with it

I made this mix to try and highlight what I consider the finest of this style and I have sort of divided it into two separate camps : a light and a dark kosmische style. The lighter side is on I think that most people are familiar with…more dreamy and flowing. Trippy but not overtly dark or sinister. Good vibes only as you might say. That will be the first 2 hours of this mix.

My favorite aspect of the “kosmische” world is one that’s more dark. More closely related to the cassette culture/industrial era that followed. It no doubt influenced a lot of the 80’s musicians like Nurse With Wound, Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, Clock DVA etc.. This style has more unsettling sounds, dissonance, and frankly is more bad trip kind of vibe as its not all sunny and dreamy. Also i delve into the world of more academic electronic music in parts of this mix and fuse it in. This is my favorite style and I did my best to try and create a certain feeling that is distinct. I feel like the DNA of this aesthetic more closely aligns with a more modern, less hippy approach to psychedelic music, and thats the one that truly appeals to me. The last track is an hour of this sound and I originally did this as a guest mix for LYL Radio in Lyon France. I really went for it and personally really enjoy listening to it. I hope you will too

BTW….the second mix is so heavily layered that it could be difficult to understand where one track starts and one track ends. I sometimes used 3 tracks overtop of each other to create the sound I wanted. So think of this as a little bit of a creative mix rather than just a running assembly of tracks.
