I wanted to thank everyone for signing up. Not completely ready to launch yet but I’m getting there. I really don’t really know how to use this Substack yet but i wanted to do something quick to show my appreciation for the sign up. While this newsletter will cover a lot of ground musically (psych, British folk, post punk, progressive rock, industrial, krautrock, ect ect ect…the ambient techno post seemed to gather a lot of interest. In that spirit, here are a few more items
Flare - Reference To Difference (1995)
This one is from techno maestro Ken Ishii. Beautiful melodic ambient techno of the old school with simple but still complex rhythms. For me, a lot of the later era stuff got more complicated than it needed to be. This one strikes the right balance
Daniel Pemberton - Bedroom (1994)
The Fax label as many of you no doubt are aware was super huge and very influential at the time. This one was one that i really enjoyed and it came from a then 17 year old “Bedroom” producer. Pemberton has gone on to record many important film soundtracks and television scores but this was his debut outing. One of the gems from the massive catalog
Astral Engineering - Chronoglide (1993)
Another early lost classic. This initially came out on cassette self released. It was picked up the following year and was the initial release on the Worm Interface label who did the debut releases of Tom Jenkinson (Squarepusher) and Freeform. Floating ambience with bubbling sequenced synths and compelling rhythms. One i think tat should be in almost everyone’s collection who enjoys the sound of the era
Double Muffled Dolphin - My Left Side Is Out Of Sync (1994)
This lovely album came from the April records label out of Denmark. They entered the scene with a lovely compilation album called “Boredom Is Deep and Mysterious”. This led to the full length by DMD. a few standout tracks but the principal one for me is the track “Musik for Tyske Biler: Ind Og Ud Af Byen”. Lovely building melodic ambient with a strong theme.
Tarotplane Mix For c- “Halcyon Daze Mix (For Lovegrove & Wash)”
Last up i wanted to include a mix I made for c- that reminded me of the time when i was working in a record shop in Baltimore Maryland called Modern Music. We did a lot of mailorder and the title of the mix “Halcyon Daze Mix (For Lovegrove & Wash)” was dedicated to my friends who were both influential “chill out” DJ’s at the time. I sincerely believe in track lists but c-doesn’t uses them in their uploads so i cant recall exactly what the tracks were but if you have questions, touch base and i can try to help ID
Thats it for me. I hope this was interesting and i look forward to doing more very soon
Thanks. Yeah it's good. Try to find the comp too
I found you on twitter from your thread on French cosmo music and I just have to say, kudos! Excellent recommendations. I'm somewhat new to ambient techno music and your substack feels like a secret backdoor into the best, deep cuts. Thanks!
